The early translational research of radiofrequency catheter ablation

      The history of the development of radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation is a mirror of my life’s work and has been a fulfilling professional and personal journey for me. In 1981, Gonzales and Scheinman first reported His-bundle catheter ablation using direct current (DC) in closed-chest dogs.

      Subsequently, in 1982, Gallagher and Scheinman individually applied the same technique to treat refractory supraventricular tachycardia by ablating the atrioventricular (AV) junction in humans.

      When I began my academic career at the University of Arizona Medical Center in 1982, I was intrigued by this nonpharmacologic therapeutic modality. I utilized my new faculty seed grant to launch similar in vivo dog experiments to understand the effects of DC shock on physical and pathologic changes after intended AV junction ablation and creation of complete AV block.
